Sledgehammer absolutely necessary if you want build anything since it can destroy walls and stairs - both those you've build and those existed before. Breakind doors is convinient too, but aside from couple of gunstores you would rarely ever need to do that and practically any weapon can break doors - it's only matter of speed.

If you're gonna use the sledgehammers as weapon at least stomp on enemies to save durability and energy. It's the weight that's the issue - impractical if you want to scavenge as well. The sledgehammer is for 2 things getting into the gun store and knocking out stairwells for safe houses in towns.
