The 1301 is a much more modern design (especially the Mod 2) and in some aspects beats the M4 in terms of quality of life features and ergonomics (larger bolt release, larger magazine from the factory, better trigger, lighter, faster cycling from a more refined gas system, etc.) that do give it a legitimate leg up over the M4. 4.The biggest differences are that the Beretta 1301 is lighter, Benelli M4 has a pistol grip option, and the systems used to cycle the action. Both systems are reliable and will shoot just about any shell you throw at it, though from what I’ve seen the the M4 may struggle with lighter loads…. Have not heard this issue the the 1301.

The lightness of the 1301 and harder felt recoil made it slightly longer to get back on target. The weight of the m4 was smoother and easier to get on to the next target. It’s a ying/yang deal. Both companies offer models for hunters and clay shooters that are better suited to those tasks. The main difference between the M4 and 1301 seems to be inertia vs. gas within the realm of 3-gun competition and defense. Just my 2 cents.

The fundamental difference between Benelli M4 and Beretta 1301 is "short stroke vs long stroke" piston systems. After the shotgun is fired, the gas piston strikes the bolt carrier group back to start the cycling process. Benelli M4 uses a simpler short stroke design. There are fewer parts in the bolt carrier group. It means "less weight to move".

It’s a true lightweight shotgun option. At 6.4 pounds, it’s a comparative featherweight. In recent years the 1301 has claimed ground from the Benelli M4 and represents a very modern shotgun with some serious tactical potential. I own the M4 and have shot the 1301 tactical. The M4 is a tank of a shotgun. Ultra reliable and not that bad in recoil. The 1301 is light as all get out but recoil is light. Have a 1301 and it makes shooting so much easier than using the Moss 500. The double is easier on my shoulder but the 1301 gives more rounds before a reload. Arthritis has made a pump hurt racking the slide, also fast arm movement to draw a pistol hurts. A 1301 cross slung seems to cause the smallest amount of discomfort.

Softest shooting 12 gauge made. Yep, it's on my want list. Well, I've not shot the 1301, but the versa max shoots like a kitten. It's got an awesome gas system and some weight behind it. V3 is essentially the same gas system in a lighter gun. I had a V3 cut down to 18.5" and that thing is friggin quick.

Shooting the Benelli M1014. One of the nicest things about the Benelli M4 is shooting it. The A.R.G.O. system works incredibly well and a lot of the recoil is absorbed because of the gas system.
