The 1301 is a much more modern design (especially the Mod 2) and in some aspects beats the M4 in terms of quality of life features and ergonomics (larger bolt release, larger magazine from the factory, better trigger, lighter, faster cycling from a more refined gas system, etc.) that do give it a legitimate leg up over the M4. 4.The biggest differences are that the Beretta 1301 is lighter, Benelli M4 has a pistol grip option, and the systems used to cycle the action. Have a 1301 and it makes shooting so much easier than using the Moss 500. The double is easier on my shoulder but the 1301 gives more rounds before a reload.
