Dec 1, 2022 · This paper uses the newspaper-based Equity Market Volatility (EMV) trackers to forecast crude oil market volatility. We focus on three specific EMV trackers, namely, overall EMV (OEMV), commodity EMV (CEMV), and petroleum EMV (PEMV). We find that all the EMV trackers can improve the forecasting performance of crude oil market volatility.

Our value framework suggests that stock valuations still don’t reflect current economic realities, so it’s important to proceed with caution. We could continue to see volatility for some time.
