You can make the argument that its a spacing tool or whatever but that doesnt really make sense since a roll not only achieves pretty much the same effect but does it in a much safer manner as well.

since backstep has no i-frames is it bad or just situational? many enemies will stay locked onto you if you try to dodge an attack too early therefore using the back step in these situation makes no sense and in other situations i can think of i dont see how a simple roll isn't better or if you want retaliation just counter attack after blocking.
