I like Seven Seas because it works for every kind of civ. For the exploration side of the game, I like maps like Continents and islands, Archipelago, Island Plates or Small Continents where you discover the map with naval units, following the coasts. My problem with canals is that they only cover 1 tile, they should cover from 1 to 3 tiles. Covering three tiles is exactly what the panama canal can do. If u just manage cities well and become more experienced at the game u should automatically fall into getting a science victory or domination victory way before the turn limit is reached. Think Pangea / Seven seas are most fun maps. Barbarians and secret societies always on - Most fun modes tbh. Earlier I used to heavily rig games in my favor. Large maps with 8 players, seven seas / continents - abundant resources and legendary start, more hills, more jungles etc. In terms of win conditions, I play with all on.

It's good when you start on a different landmass from other civs, but if not you get stuck with a small amount of space until you can send settlers across water. It also sucks when sea levels rise and wipe out up to 70% of usable land of some cities, until you get flood barriers. 3.
